Today is World Spay Day 2020. We repeat over and over the need to Neuter. This year. Just this. This is the horrific result of 1 unneutered male and female cat. Please share, share and share. The same applies to dogs, so NEUTER AND SPAY! The only answer to to sadness we witness on a daily basis.

A RECENT REVIEW VIA TRIP ADVISOR!!!!
What wonderful work KAR does!!
While I was visiting my parents over Christmas vacation, I went to the Kyrenia Animal Rescue to see the shelter and walk some dogs. When I first got in, I was impressed by how organized and clean the (rather large!) kennels were and how happy the dogs seemed to be. I was quickly greeted by one of the staff (Ian) and after talking about what kind of dog I hoped to walk, not only did he get the dog for me but brought him all the way out and passed some of the kennels so it would be easy for me to take from there. When I came back, another staff member (Andrew) took the dog from me and brought him back to his kennel, which gave me a chance to look around before I went out with another one.
The staff at KAR clearly care about the dogs: the kennels are very clean, there were ample dog houses in each enclosure and the dogs were well-groomed. ( was actually told several of them had just come back from a teeth cleaning!) Staff are also keenly aware of what housing situations make for happy dogs. One of the things they were doing when I came was introducing a new dog to two dogs that were already in a kennel together to see how they would get along. Instead of just putting dogs in kennels together, the staff take time and effort to determine which dogs they will best cohabitate with, so they are all happy together. This struck me as a very important and very professional practice in an animal rescue shelter like this, so was happy to see part of the process involved in that.
I was also really happy to see the large, enclosed exercise area they had created for the dogs. This area had different benches, poles, ramps and other obstacles that the dogs had to interact with and run around. This makes for an easier option for potential adopters to play with the dogs, as well as anyone who would like to come and visit with the animals but might find it hard to go on a walk per se. Not to mention how good it is for the dogs themselves to get some much-needed play and run time!
Overall, I was really impressed with how KAR ran their centre: the staff were knowledgeqble, helpful and attentive; the kennels were clean and the houses well maintained; and the dogs looked happy and healthy. I will be back next time I visit and encourage anyone else to go who is an animal lover!
We still need ‘softies’ to keep the dogs, puppies and poorly cats dry and warm. Please declutter your homes and drop off at Veni Vici or Black Olive on the West and the Karakum Office and Kyrenia Shops on the East. The Centre are struggling to wash wet and dirty bedding as the weather is particularly chilly at the top of the mountain!!!!!

Don’t forget to register you dogs with you local beledeyesi (council) during January!!! Take your vet book it’s a minimal charge per dog.

Sad to announce that due to a shortage of volunteers, our No1 Shop in Girne is closed today (Thursday) and will be closed on a Thursday for a while. Also House and Home, Girne, will be closed tomorrow (Friday). All because a shortage of staff. Please help us keep our shops open, our dogs and cats at the centre are the casualties of the shops being closed, as every penny raised goes to their welfare….. make a difference and volunteer. email the office for details kartrnc@gmail.com or call 0533 869 4098. a few hours a week, make all the difference!!!

This is a lovely FGF!!!!! Archie formerly Daz, was a much loved resident at the Centre, beloved by everyone he met. He really was our gentle giant….. His brother went to Canada last year, now it was his turn…… His HUGE box had to be specially made… and Tuesday was D Day…… (Daz Day)… Here is Robin’s (New family), message to us at KAR…
“He was a bit spooked getting out of his crate, but now wandering around the house and nudging us all for cuddles. He has met the rest of the pack (2 others) and so far all good.
He is coping really well with so many new things (we are having building works going on – & circular saws/drills have not phased him at all).
He is desperate to play – but doesn’t quite know how at this point but can see he will really be up for some lively games with us and his new pack”.
Have a wonderful life Archie aka Daz, we miss you….. especially Elaine, who is still sobbing…….. 🐾🐶🐾😂🐾🐾

So as Winter arrives for 2020, it is a Season we always dread with weather damage and the threat to life.
Yesterday, during the high winds and terrible storms our worst nightmare was realized
Late yesterday afternoon, a large branch fell from the overhanging tree bringing an electric cable with it, onto the roof of the cattery. The branch immediately began ‘sparking’ as the electric current passed through it.
Emergency procedures were put into operation, with the relevant Services being called. Kibtek, The Forestry Department, The Fire Brigade… But as we waited, the danger began to escalate.
Four members of staff stayed behind to wait for the emergency services, but then had to start evacuating the cats as the fear of fire became a reality.
Ian Jones, decided he needed to be on the roof of the cattery to try and protect the building and the possibility of the potential fire spreading.
No emergency services arrived.
Ian Jones spent 4 hours on the roof the cattery.
David, Jasmine and Antony – moved all the cats to safety and then helped to protect the cattery.
Yulihan – repeatedly called all the Emergency Services, moved all the vehicles to provide light to the Cattery Area.
These 5 members of staff, prevented a potential tragedy at the Centre and words of thanks are not enough, but it is all we have.
Their dedication to the animals at the centre was phenomenal, with risk to their own safety, they battled to save the Cattery and potential spread of a devastating fire.
After 4 hours Kibtek remotely turned off the electric, which allowed, Ian, David and Antony to removed the entangled cable and cut back the branch.
We use the Term ‘KAR Heroes’ a lot, but this is SuperHero Status for these 5 members of the KAR Family.

KAR Education team visit to Karakum Anaokulu
On Thursday December 19th the Education team, Maggie Smith, Carole Widdison, Carol Easton and Ruby had the pleasure of teaching the preschool children at Karakum school. There were 44 delightful, and extremely well behaved children who enjoyed taking part in the activities during the lesson.
The class were introduced to Ruby and told a little about the Rescue centre at Beşparmak, which was Ruby`s home until a short while ago when Maggie gave her a forever home.
The first activity showed the children what dogs and cats needed to be happy and healthy. They looked at things the animals needed such as bowls, collars, nametags and leads, a brush, a blanket and toys. One of the children came out and showed how to brush Ruby.
They then learnt how to stroke a dog correctly, letting it sniff their hand first. The demonstration used Maggie, whose permission had to be asked for first, and Ruby. The lesson finished with the children learning how to behave around dogs on the streets. They learnt to ` stand like a tree ` in silence while Maggie pretended to be a dog barking near them. It is quite a sight seeing 44 children standing like this and trying not to giggle.
Each child had a folder of activity sheets to complete and take home to show their families.
We are very grateful for the welcome we always get at this school and the involvement of the Director and teachers in the lesson, especially in their help translating for us. There were also donations of food that the children had brought for the animals which was much appreciated.

URGENT!!! We have a desperate need for any ‘softies’ you may have. The bad weather leads to a shortage and we currently have cats in quarantine with a bad gastro virus, which means we need clean bedding on a twice daily basis. We are trying to wash as much as we can, but the weather hampers the drying process!!!.. Please, drop anything you have at either Veni Vici on the West and the Karakum Office on the East Side. You can drop directly to the Centre as well. TIA
