This handsome boy is Maraş, who was found by another animal rescue group. They asked for our help as he had a broken back foot, so he came to stay with us and his foot is now healing nicely. He is about 8 years old, very friendly and as you can see, he doesn’t mind being sniffed by Evie – our resident photo-bomber! He has probably been on the streets for his whole life so it would be fantastic if he could spend his senior years in a home of his own. Please come and see him once the centre is open again – we will of course be making an announcement when we can allow visitors again. Please share for Maraş!

AN ODE TO OUR CHARITY SHOP VOLUNTEERS (written by our budding poetess JW – Shop Volunteer)
It’s half past nine, We turn the sign -‘open’
We are open for sales,
Whether or not there are gales.
It’s a great place to make friends,
And we try to set trends,
Displaying clothes in a fashionable way…
And hoping the customers will pay
Oh, here’s a donation, we need to sort,
We thank the kind person the way we are taught,
There are items for the centre….
And items for the rails,
We all hope today we’ll have good sales.
Did I hear some one say ‘coffee’?
We always welcome a drink,
We take a few minutes giving us time to think.
Within the shop, you become part of the team,
As looking after hundreds of dogs is not just a dream.
How time has flown it’s almost 1,
We cash up the money to see how we’ve done.
We say our goodbyes and smile as we leave.
We have had some fun
And now it’s time for some sun.
Don’t forget to turn the sign… ‘closed’
KAR are always looking for additional volunteers for their Charity Shops. There are 3 shops in total. Gladrags is situated in Karakum, on the main road out of Kyrenia, together with our office. The other 2, Shop 1 and House and Home, are behind the fire station in the centre of Kyrenia. Due to Covid restrictions they are all currently closed but once the restrictions have been lifted they will re-open. The opening hours depend on what the government will allow AND the number of volunteers we have. There have been times when KAR have had to close a shop because there was no-one to man it! The Charity Shops are one of our main sources of income to pay for the food and medications needed by our rescue centre, that’s how important they and our shop volunteers are!
If you would like to volunteer in one of our shops it doesn’t need to be a huge commitment. 3.5 hours a week would be great, any more would be fantastic. Please e-mail the office on kartrnc@gmail.com and we will contact you once we are open again.
22 FEBRUARY IS INTERNATIONAL WALK YOUR DOG DAY
How appropriate for those of us in TRNC as from today we can once more go out into the fresh air and walk our dogs!
International Walk the Dog Day combines two things that dogs love: exercise and the great outdoors. Taking your dog on a daily walk is a great way to get your dog (and you) some exercise. For older dogs, a daily walk can be the difference between an active or a lazy senior dog. Taking your dog on a walk helps keep their leg muscles strong and their joints running smoothly like they should. For younger dogs, a daily walk is a fabulous way to help your pup relieve pent up energy and expose them to new surroundings.
No matter if you’re walking your pup around the block in your neighborhood or taking them to the community park, just being outdoors and in a new environment with new sights and smells is fun for any dog! Dogs love being outdoors and all that is has to offer, so grab the leash and re-start this daily walking routine with your loyal furry family member.
Unfortunately our Rescue Centre is not yet open so, as much as we would like you to come and walk one of our dogs, please be patient. There will be an announcement of Facebook advising when it is open.
ELLIE
This beautiful girl is Ellie. She was found outside our office back in November on the day of the tornado, poor Ellie must have been terrified. After a visit to the vet she was found to have entropian of the eyelid in her right eye and unfortunately that eye had to be removed. However, Ellie copes very well as the vision in her left eye is fine.
We think she may previously have had a home as she loves being with people and is very gentle and unassuming. Ellie is spayed, microchipped and vaccinated so all she now needs is a forever home!
We hope very much that we will be able to open again to visitors before too long. So, if you think you might like to offer Ellie a home, please let us know and we will be in touch once we get the go ahead to open. In the meantime, please share for Ellie and let’s find her the home she so badly deserves.
HARPER AND WILLOW (was Wilma)
Cast your mind back to August of this year and the wonderful story of Wilma (now Willow). She was dumped at our Rescue Centre 3 years previous when she was around 3 months old. She was a very lucky lady and found her furever home quite close to the centre in Catalkoy.
Now cast your mind back to last month and our beautiful Harper. She was dumped at the centre back in March last year with severe mental and medical problems. Many months of hard work, love, care and devotion by the centre staff and Harper became a loving, trusting dog ready for her furever home.
Cue Willow’s owners. They were wanting a companion for Willow and thought Harper would be ideal for the job. They met Harper at the centre and immediately fell in love with her. Everyone is so happy that these 2 sad stories finally have a fabulous happy ending.
COSMO, OREO AND GIGI
Let us introduce ourselves. We are Cosmo, Oreo and Gigi. Aren’t we all just gorgeous! Straight from the lid of a chocolate box (ooops showing my age, lol)
We are now fully vaccinated, neutered and ready for adoption. Truth of the matter is that if we don’t find our furever home soon we are destined to live our lives in the KAR rescue centre which is so sad. We would love to play outside and make new friends and would make someone a lovely furry companion. Sitting on someone’s knee being stoked and cuddled sounds purrfect to us. We promise to return all the love we are given ten times over.
Please come along to our rescue centre in the Besparmark Mountains and pay us a visit. The centre is open 7 days a week from 9am to 1pm. We look forward to seeing you very soon.

JESSIE (was Winter)
Here’s lucky Winter (now Jessie) who went to her forever home last week. Sue, her new owner sent us some lovely photos of Jessie in her new home and this is what she had to say –
“Hello, thought I would send you some photos of Winter, now Jessie & update. She is adorable and has settled in so well. She loves her walks yesterday she had her first experience of the beach. When we brought her home she made us laugh she did not know how to get up two steps outside bungalow.”
We now understand that Jessie has mastered the steps and can now jump in and out of the car – clever girl!
Jessie was one of a litter of 7 who came into the centre with their Mum when they were just one day old. Mum Daisy now lives in the UK, however 3 of Jessie’s siblings are still at the centre and waiting for their forever home. We are open to visitors every day between 9am and 1pm – please come and see Jessie’s siblings – Wyllie, Wren & Wally – if you think you might like to give them a home.
ESSENTIAL OILS WARNING
Saturday night I got home late and my dog didn’t recognize me. Being a nanny I thought I woke him up and he was having a night terror. Sunday, he was still acting weird. I realized that I had been running my new diffuser and decided to turn it off. Sunday afternoon, he was feeling better.
Today at work, my dog sitter said that he wouldn’t come out from under the bed. It was very odd as he is a happy dog.
I came from work early and again, he was very confused about who I was.
So I took him to emergency vet.
It turns out that the tea tree oil I was using in the diffuser is toxic for dogs. Thankfully the test showed that his liver was ok but we weren’t out of the woods yet. He was given fluids under his skin to get the toxins out.
The vet and the poison control are saying that they see these cases often now that the popularity of essential oil is growing.
Please make sure that the essential oils you are burning are not toxic for your pets.
