MY TIME WITH KAR – JULIE (MEETER AND GREETER)

” Back in 2007, the husband announced “lets live abroad, it will be good for our health” my first thought was has he taken leave of his senses? However the idea grew and the idea of living abroad was born.
Fast forward to 2013, we moved into our villa, our worldly goods arrived a week later. Retiring from a 32 year career in nursing, I now had the time to take up hobbies I wanted to do, but never had the time (or the inclination to be honest) to start. Joining a craft group made lovely new friends and new skills, but I wanted a little more, a chance purchase of Cyprus Today I read an advertisement asking for volunteers for a new shop for KAR, a phone call and a visit later saw me start my volunteering role at KAR (still work in the shop, love it!)
There’s only so much cleaning a woman can do in retirement (well in my case it is) KAR had put the call out for Meeters and Greeters at our rescue centre, it was for people who would show visitors around thus saving the staff from having to stop what they were doing to show visitors around. I like meeting people I’m quite chatty so after a discussion with the husband I asked to do a Tuesday morning at the centre, husband was golfing that morning so it would only be the cats home alone.
A Tuesday came and I set off, an introduction and a sheet informing me about KAR was read and I was ready to meet and greet. Summer time can be busy, as well as our regular dog walkers, we have our swallows and holiday makers come to have a look round. Social media and sites like Trip Advisor inform people that we exist and people are welcome to visit us.
I show people around, explain about our work, answer any questions they may have, it’s that simple! I’ve met some very nice people over the years and some of our visitors have fell in love with some of our dogs, in that they have adopted them and the dogs have a happy life in the UK and in Europe, even as far as Canada.
All was well, until Covid hit, places closed down, and obviously the centre closed to visitors, our shops closed and our income drastically reduced. I could not go to the centre until the restrictions eased. Currently our visitors are few and far between, but I still go to help, marigolds on I simply help with cleaning, 42 cat bowls, a large number of litter trays washed and ready for our kitties, I give the vet room the weekly clean and I will do what is needed, I’m not one to sit and twiddle my thumbs. I socialize our kittens, a task I love, and do not complain about doing…ever .
Coffee time is 10 am and everyone sits and chats, and we have a good team that work well together.
2022 should hopefully see return of our visitors/holidaymakers, they are sorely missed. So, if you fancy doing some volunteering, have 4 hours to spare would like to be amid people and happy barking dogs, and you like meeting people, then join us. Oh, and last but not least don’t wear your good clothes, our dogs do not recognize the difference between good clothing and clothing you don’t mind getting a little mucky.”

PIPPI (WAS PEBBLES)

Back in 2013 we took in a littler of pups that had been abandoned in Girne. Pebbles was one of those pups. We don’t know (or understand) why Pebbles was never chosen for a home of her own. She was a happy friendly girl who loved to meet people.
As you are probably aware our Rescue Center is based in the mountains – amid lots of pine trees and conifers. In 2017 Pebbles was stung by one of the notorious ” Pine Processionary caterpillars”. They are so toxic – to humans and dogs alike – and just breathing in their hair can cause dramatic and serious health problems.
Poor Pebbles – her tongue was affected and she eventually had to have some of her tongue removed. However once she recovered she returned to her usual happy self and she was able to eat and drink fine.
Still no one offered her a home.
Then Jatta (who had previously adopted a dog from South Cyprus) contacted us from Finland. She was interested in adopting a dog from us.
We sent Jatta some info and photos about several of our dogs as well as the information on the process – and YAY – she chose Pebbles.
The adoption paperwork was all completed and Pebbles began her travel prep.
Then along came Co Vid and Pebbles travel plans were put on hold. Earlier this year Jatta had managed to arrange to fly over to collect Pebbles (soon to be Pippi) – alas at short notice her flight from Finland was cancelled. So Pebbles waited – happy with her friends up at KAR but wanting to go to her new home.
On Sunday it was finally “her ” time. Time to travel.
Jatta had visited her at the Center on Saturday and we arranged to take Pebbles to Ercan early on Sunday morning for her flight “home ” with Jatta.
After checking her in Kim said her KAR goodbyes.
Pebbles/Pippi is settling in well with Jatta and her family – she has even had a trip to the beauty parlour.

VISIT BY MUSTAFA CAĞATAY SCHOOL TO KAR CENTRE

On Friday 8th April 32 very excited 9 /10 year olds arrived at the rescue centre for a visit. They were from Mustafa Cağatay primary school in Zeytinlik and were accompanied by 2 teachers and their Head teacher Dr. Sait Coşaner.
Not only had they brought donations of food but between the children they had collected an amazing 1615 tl to donate to KAR for the animals.
They had a look around the dogs and the cattery, found out about the centre and took it in turns to walk some of the dogs if they wanted to, which they really enjoyed.
The Education team gave the teachers a pack of their workbooks called `The Happy Pets workbook ` and the team members were delighted to see photos of them enjoying the workbooks in a lesson. When the workbooks are completed they go home to the families to see and are in both Turkish and English.
A big thank you to The Head teacher, staff and children for coming to visit the animals at KAR and their wonderful donations. We hope to see you again.

MY TIME WITH KAR – CATHY (ONE OF OUR OFFICE ANGELS) – POST COVID

” I saw an advert for the position of Office Angel after the first lock down and thought that would be ideal for me. Only 2 mornings a week, get me out of the house and meeting new people, nice little job, keep me out of mischief and give something back to the community. I’d been fine during the lockdown but as soon as my other half went back to work I was lost on my own. There’s only so much cleaning and sunbathing a girl can do!
Being an office angel is a bit like working in a circus.
Lion Taming – First job in the morning is to feed the local street cats. The most I’ve seen in one go is 13 but usually there are 6 or 7. There is plenty of hissing and spitting goes on as they all want feeding first. One of them, a long haired tabby, is very vocal. You would think they hadn’t been fed for a month the way they carry on and they will try to convince you all morning you still haven’t fed them! This one likes to eat straight out of the cup as you pour the biscuits into the bowl. Once the biscuits hit the bowl they’re not so interested any more, but will eat them eventually. Strange!
Acrobat/Contortionist – We loan out cat traps, cages and baskets to people to help them catch cats in order to take them to the vet for treatment. Saying we are short of storage space in the office is an understatement. Our stock of traps, cages and baskets are kept in one of the toilets and are stacked from floor to ceiling if we have none out on loan. You can always bet though, that when someone comes in to borrow one of these, the one they want is the one tucked away right at the bottom or stacked high above my head. I’m not the most agile person I know so this can be quite a challenge and often ends up with me in clambering, not very elegantly, over numerous contraptions.
Usherette – One of the main qualifications you just absolutely must have to be an office angel is the ability to make a good cuppa and carry it up 2 flights of steps, together with any cake or biscuits one of the volunteers might have brought in with them, without spilling any. I’m good at this, but then I have had lots of practice over the years.
Clown – Volunteering for a charity that deals with animal welfare can be harrowing at times and some of the things we’ve all seen or heard about are enough to make your blood boil and your stomach churn. All these instances are dealt with absolute professionalism but sometimes we just need to let off steam in order to maintain our sanity. I thought I looked very fetching in the bright red wig we’d had donated as I pretended to be on a catwalk strutting up and down the shop area, but I’m not so sure the customer who came into Gladrags was of the same opinion.
Juggler – There are never 2 days the same here in the office. You just never know what is going to end up on your desk that needs “sorting” NOW and I love it (well most of the time anyway). An average day (is there such a thing?) in no specific order, can be balancing the expenditure, answering emails, making a fuss of four legged visitors, answering the phone, making coffee, updating our Social Media presence (those little cartoons you wake up to every morning?? Yes that’s down to me, sorry), buying in pet food, organising rubbish bins for the centre, booking in cats for neutering, loaning out traps and cages, feeding the office cats, paying bills, taking in donations, shopping in Gladrags and dealing with anything else that lands on the desk.
I love my role within Team KAR and really do feel like I am making a difference.
If you’ve got a spare few hours on a regular basis you should try it. There’s so many different areas of the charity you can volunteer in there’s bound to be one that’s right up your street! “

ZARA

Our office “Angels” never know what each day is going to bring. They quite often arrive at the Karakum office to see bags of donations that kind people have left – donations are always needed and always wanted.
But last year, towards the end of June, one donation outside the office, one morning, was “different” – it was with trepidation that Kim approached the cardboard box on the office front doorstep. Her heart just knew that this would not be books, clothes, toys or anything like that.
Opening the box a little face looked up at her and whimpered – a small white puppy (about 5 – 6 weeks old) was trying to cuddle up to the concrete block weighting the box down.
Kim checked the puppy out – she was a little girl and appeared to be in pretty good condition. After a little check over , some food ( not the little bowl of salad vegetables left in the box ), a drink and cuddles the puppy settled into a warm soft towel and promptly went to sleep in the office – waiting until she could be taken up to the center and into the quarantine area (where all new arrivals must go).
Fast forward to 2022 – Zara (as she is now called) had been staying in KAR foster care, she was simply too vulnerable and small to stay up at the center AND ——– YAY ——–she had been adopted and was being travel prepped for the UK. This could not begin until she 3 months old.
Last week she flew to her new home in the UK. As you can see she is somewhat bigger now – but still as pretty and she is enjoying all of her new experiences (the North sea instead of the Med, maybe even Cockles instead of Hamsi ) in the UK with her new loving family who had waited so long for her.
She certainly is living life “outside the box” !!!
Happy Days Zara xxx
