CENTRE VOLUNTEERS – DOG AND CAT GROOMING
Please let me introduce you to Michael Robinson. Michael volunteers at the rescue centre, as and when he can, as a dog groomer. With over 300 animals awaiting his attention he has plenty of customers all queuing up for his services. One of our other volunteers, Julie, regularly grooms our cats and with the change of season fast approaching both Michael and Julie will be kept very busy. Fancy giving them a helping hand? Doesn’t matter if you’ve zero experience grooming animals. There’s always a dog to bathe, or a cat to cuddle (erm…. I mean brush). Social interaction is very important to all our animals at the centre and is part of the care we give to them all.
We are always looking for volunteers at the centre, not just people to groom the animals. We have volunteers who regularly take dogs for a walk (when it’s not too hot) and try their best to get them used to walking nicely on a lead. We have volunteers who meet and greet visitors to the centre and show them around telling them about the centre and the animals. We have volunteers who help with the daily needs of the animals, with feeding them and keeping their enclosures clean. Maybe you have a different skill that may help us enrich the lives of our animals? Please call in at our rescue centre and discuss with our manager what you have to offer. I’m sure you’ll be welcomed with open arms. The centre is open 7 days a week from 9am to 1pm and can be found up the mountain road above Arapkoy (turn off left at the huge white Carringtons sign).
Look forward to welcoming you to our team!

THANK YOU LITTLE STEPS NURSERY, KARAKUM

October 4th was World Animal Day and the fabulous children at Little Steps Nursery in Karakum decided they would like mark this day by donating food to KAR. Elaine, our centre manager, went along on Monday morning to thank the children for their generous donation of food. In these difficult times we would find it nearly impossible to continue our work without such generosity. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Keep Fit with KAR

The cooler weather is here (thank goodness I hear many of you say) and it’s time to think about getting out and about in our beautiful countryside before winter and the rain starts. How about incorporating walking one (or more) of our centre dogs in the beautiful countryside around the Besparmark mountain into your regime? It would be of benefit to both you and the dogs. They love a good walk and we have a choice of walks and an exercise area for you. You will also be helping the dogs socialise which is very important to them when they go to their furever homes.
The centre is open 7 days a week from 9am to 1pm. No need to make an appointment just pop along to the centre, pick your pooch and enjoy the stunning scenery while keeping yourself (and your walking companion) fit and healthy. Look forward to seeing you soon.

Paws For Thought

Calling all pet owners
It is important to think about who would care for your pets in the event of your inability, illness or death, and to implement a plan to prevent your pets from ending up in a shelter where they could spend the rest of their lives.
Discuss with your family and friends the possibility of them taking over the care of your pets if you are unable to care for them anymore.
Carry a card in your purse or wallet alerting someone you have a pet at home and list of emergency contacts if something happens to you.
Make a pet file containing information about your pet/pets that would be valuable to a potential guardian/carer in your absence.
Include things like :
1. Habits
2. Food preferences
3.Medical conditions and medications taken
4.Veterinary information and records
5.Behaviour around other pets/people/children.
Advise somebody where this is kept.
Please ensure you have accounted in your will for provision and instruction.
They are your family, they will not do well either on the street or shelter environment.
Please make provision.

How sweet is our Honey?

Hello! Let me introduce myself. My name is Honey and they tell me I’m one of KAR’s Golden Oldies. I arrived at the centre in 2011 and live there happily with all my other doggie friends. Many of my friends have moved on to their furever homes and would love for someone to take me home too please. If that’s not possible I would be ever so grateful if someone could find it in their hearts to sponsor me so I can live out my days at the centre knowing somebody cares about me.

If you have room for Honey in your life please contact the KAR office on kartrnc@gmail.com Thank you

KAR AGM 2020

Kyrenia Animal Rescue held their Annual General Meeting on 22nd July. Thirteen members attended. Margaret Ray gave a full and comprehensive report on KAR’s activities through 2019. She said that they were extremely thankful that 2019 was a much happier year than the previous year when we lost so many of our beautiful dogs to distemper. Forever homes were found for 48 dogs/puppies and 37 cats/kittens 16 of those dogs were found homes overseas in Germany, Dubia, UK and Canada. 815 cats and 60 dogs were neutered during the year which resulted in the totals since records began in 2002 of 10,962 cats and 3,815 dogs which was a great achievement and without doubt is having a massive impact in our fight against reducing the numbers of unwanted animals on the streets.

Over 1800 visitors came to the rescue centre during the year this was helped by winning the Trip Advisor certificate of Excellence and being voted number one in ’34 things to do in Kyrenia’. We are very proud of our Rescue Centre and thank all our visitors who brought donations put photos on social media and who have given us kind words of support.

Our Education Team have given a full report which can be seen on our Website and our Pet Travel department record another busy year for incoming and outgoing pets.

Our three Charity Shops, events throughout the year, sponsorship etc. have all helped immensely with funding.

We are the only private run shelter in the TRNC and are very proud of what we have achieved. It is always a struggle to maintain the high standard that we want for the animals in our care. We could not get there without the fantastic help and backing from my fellow Committee Members, our wonderful team at the centre, our great volunteers and our friends and supporters at home and overseas.

We give our eternal thanks to you all. We will continue, with your help.

The Financial Report on the 2019 Audited Accounts was presented by the Treasurer Marian Clay.

Committee members elected for 2020/21 were Margaret Ray, Gwen Cassell, Denise Aksoy, Marion Clay, Dilys Guthrie and co-opt members Jacky Kester and Senem Burkuoglu.

EDUCATION REPORT 2019

Blue and Star

2 pups were dumped recently in Catalkoy. they are approx 4 months old and because we literally have no space at our Rescue Center we were not able to take them in. Thankfully we had an offer of a foster placement until space can be made. They really need a home of their own

They are both girls, have their vaccinations, have been wormed and flead. They have had a full blood test for any nasties/parasites etc and were given the all clear. and will be neutered when they are old enough.

Star and Blue were a little wary of being indoors instead of outside initially. We can only assume that they had not been allowed indoors by the people who dumped them. But now they like their comfy beds indoors.
They are now walking well on their leads, beginning to learn how to sit, come and stay, They are good in the car. All in all they are a little (well not so little) pair of crackers.

They are  looking for their “furever” family – is that YOU ? If so please call 0090 533 4098 or email kartrnc@gmail.com

Sylvie

Do you remember Sylvie ? We told you about her back in March …..” She was rescued from the busy mountain road with her sibling Sidney in the autumn of 2018 – they were about 6 weeks old. Sylvie had suffered quite serious facial traumas. Both of her eyes had scars, one eye had a split bottom lid (which was repaired). She (and Sidney) went straight into KAR Quarantine. Now 18 months later and she is still having treatment for her facial injuries. Her facial bone structure has been altered due to the injuries she suffered before she was rescued.
Recently she had severe facial swelling and it was thought that it was due to an infected tooth root. The tooth was removed and she was given antibiotics. However the swelling increased and further veterinary advice was sought. She had a further operation and fragments of bone and tooth were removed from the root canal. However that did not affected the swelling – she has a serious infection in the bone and/or sinus area. She was put on a high dosage of antibiotics – but to no avail.
Yet another operation was carried out very recently – an incision was made from her mouth up into her face so that the infection itself could be drained. She has had to be taken to the animal hospital, in Lefkosa, every 2 days for the drainage hole to be cleared and re packed.”

Sylvie went on to have another operation to remove tooth fragments which had migrated into her face. We were hopeful that her problem was cured and for a while now it seemed that she was healed and was “back to norm”.
However this week the swelling has returned and she is obviously in pain – so she was taken back to the clinic. She is going to need another exploratory operation to open up her face again to try and find what the cause of this latest problem is. That operation will cost us 1500TL and then depending on what they vet/professor finds there is likely to be further costs. Although the clinic is reducing the rate (as we are a Charity) we are still going to be facing (no pun intended !) a big vet bill for Sad Sylvie.
She has been through so much already but she is a young happy dog and she deserves to live her life pain free – we need to help her. Can any of you help us to help her – please ?
If you can donate towards Sylvie’s treatment please visit our website www.kartrnc.org to see how you can do so – from wherever you are.
Thank you and please keep safe during these difficult times.
